James Cameron and the alleged discovery of Jesus “bones”

Sometime in the next several weeks you are likely to hear something about a documentary which will air on the Discovery channel alleging that the burial cave of Jesus and his family has been discovered, and that their “bones” are also present. This “documentary” will suggest that they have enough evidence to support the notion that the resurrection, and the biblical account are fiction. Because James Cameron has enough money he will certainly produce a work of quality with lots of “expert” opinions it might be tempting for someone to think - here it is, the smoking gun - Christianity is finished.

Please do not be shaken by this. There have been many efforts in the past to discredit the Scriptures and in particular the resurrection. There have been theories proporting to be “facts” put forth any number of times. Some of them are still paraded out as “evidence” that the resurrection did not occur. Christians do not need to fear facts. We are not mindnumbed sycophants who at the slightest suggestion that the Bible is wrong need to circle the wagons and start shooting. Paul faced this kind allegation nearly 2000 years ago and he responded in the same way we should - (14)And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. (1 Cor. 15) We who follow Jesus know what the stakes are and we know what “facts” are essential to our faith in Jesus. The same thing can be said to the enemies of Christ. They know just as well as we do where the “beef” is (to coin a very old commercial phrase from about 20 years ago). It should not surprise us that those who have determined that Christianity is a danger to the world will not give up chasing down every possible “fact” to disparage the truth claims of Christianity.

Remember that this “fact” has been known for nearly 30 years. If this “fact” is so inflammatory why haven’t archeologists been clamoring to present the world with this earthshattering news? The answer is simple - because the news of this discovery isn’t really news. The names found in the tomb are so common to the ancient world that it simply doesn’t make a ripple in the real world of biblical archeology. Anyway, if you catch wind of the story take it in stride…

William Dever, an expert on near eastern archaeology and anthropology, who has worked with Israeli archeologists for five decades, said specialists have known about the ossuaries for years. “The fact that it’s been ignored tells you something,” said Dever, professor emeritus at the University of Arizona. “It would be amusing if it didn’t mislead so many people.”
